Welcome to the 2008-09 MHS Photo Contest

Contest Rules

WHO

01) The 2008-09 Contest is open to MHS members only. Keep in mind, however, that membership to the MHS is free. If you are not a member and you wish to enter, go to Minox.org and join today!

02) While the contest is open to all MHS Members, members of the MHS Executive Committee and their immediate family members are ineligible to win physical prizes - only glory may be awarded. The Contest Judges are eligible to enter the Member's Choice competition only, but are also ineligible to win physical prizes.

WHAT

03) All photographs must have been taken with a camera using 8 x 11 mm film, regardless of camera brand or model.

04) The MHS reserves the right to request proof of negative size. Such proof, if requested, will require submission of the original negative or slide, or a contact sheet, or whatever other means is deemed appropriate to determine the original meets the contest eligibility criteria.

05) There are four categories in which to submit entries for this year's contest, see the details in the Submission Guidelines.

06) Photographs can be of any subject matter; however, we will not accept photographs containing pornography, those glorifying illegal acts, or showing acts of gratuitous violence. The MHS judging committee reserves the
right to reject any submission deemed inappropriate.

07) You may submit up to three images to each category, for a total of 12 images in total.

08) Contest entries will be posted to the MHS Gallery/Website subject to web space availability.

09) The copyright to all entered images is retained by the photographer. Submission of an image to the 2008-09 MHS Photo Contest by the photographer/owner grants the MHS and Minox GmbH non-exclusive publication rights.

10) Photographs awarded prizes in previous MHS competitions are ineligible for this years contest.

11) Judges will rank the submissions in each category and then make their decision based on both pictorial and technical merit. Prizes will be awarded at the sole discretion of the judges.

PRIZES

12) A maximum of one prize per entrant will be awarded. Prizes are given at the sole discretion of the Judges. Actual physical prizes are yet to be announced. At the start of the contest, we don't yet have any prizes committed, but we are hopeful and looking.

So for now, the prizes are what they always were: the fun of taking part, showing your photographs, and the recognition in winning. Those are the most important reasons for entering anyway!

13) The MHS reserves the right to substitutions and changes in prizes as necessary, at any time during the Contest.

14) Prizes will be awarded at the sole discretion of the judges. The decisions of the Judges are final.

DATES

15) Entries must be date stamped no later than midnight, Eastern Standard Time (US) on December 31, 2008 in order to be eligible.

16) The Judges will have a target date of February 29, 2009 for the completion of judging and the awarding of prizes.

These rules are subject to change, at the discretion of the Contest Committee.

Please read and follow the Submission Guidelines (listed below) to enter the 2008-09 MHS Photo Contest.

2008-09 MHS Photo Contest

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

All photographs must have been taken with a camera using 8 x 11 mm film, regardless of camera brand or model. No prints or slides will be accepted: all submissions must be in digital form. Photos may be scanned from slides, negatives or prints. The following will describe how to prepare and submit your entries.

ENTRIES

Each contestant may submit images in each of the four contest categories.

- People
Portraits, Couples, Groups, Crowds, Events, etc.
(code PEO)

- Still Life/Abstract Art
All those kinds of semi-static things that are not animals.
(code SLA)

- "007"
Clandestine photos of people and places where cameras normally don't get to be.
(code SPY)

- "Exceptional technical merit"
This category stresses images which fully exploit Minox craftsmanship and which have extremely high sharpness and very fine grain. We want to see what the Minox can do.
(code MER)

( ... how to use the "code" listed with each category is explained below ... )

Entrants are responsible for picking the best
possible category for each picture. The judges will not move an entry between categories to improve its chances of winning. Any picture may only be entered in one category.

We've tried to keep the categories few and broadly defined so that you can enter a wide variety of images easily. Remember, you may enter a maximum of three submissions to each category, for a total of 12 images.

PLEASE NOTE: Submitted images may be Black & White or Color. There are no separate color and B&W categories or judging criteria.

HOW TO PREPARE A SUBMISSION

After scanning your images and doing whatever image processing is required, you need to size it for the contest's web display, set the colorspace for viewing via the web and on other people's monitors as best possible, and save it as a JPEG image file with a specific naming convention.

- All submissions should be sized to 800 pixels on the long edge.

- All submissions should have their colorspace converted, or be exported to, sRGB colorspace. (If your image editing software presents no options for colorspace conversion, the likelihood is that this is the only colorspace it offers.)

- No watermarks or borders should be applied to any submissions.

- All submissions should be saved as maximum quality JPEG files.

- Image files should be named in the pattern
"<category code>-<your initials>-<sequence number>.jpg" where
- The category codes are, as above, PEO, SLA, SPY, or MER.
- Your initials are to be Firstname/Middlename/Lastname
as for example "pdz" for Peter D. Zimmerman.
- The sequence number is a counter of the entry you've submitted to a given category.

so.....

If your name is "Michael G. Thomas" and you submit one photos to the "People" category, two to the "007" category and one in the "Technical Merit" category, the four photos would be named:
PEO-MGT-001.jpg
SPY-MGT-001.jpg
SPY-MGT-002.jpg
MER-MGT-001.jpg

Entry files using other naming conventions greatly increase the administrative overhead required to process them into the system ... and all the folks involved are volunteers! ... so if you do not use the naming convention the Contest Committee reserves the right to reject them.

In addition to the image files, each entrant must submit a *single* text file articulating any/all information about the submissions. The info file must include your name, address, phone, email address and a full list of all your submissions. Each submission should be listed by file name and be accompanied by all the details you want to provide about them. The info file should be named in the pattern "INFO-<your initials>.txt".

For Example:
Michael G. Thomas's submission info file is named
INFO-MGT.txt and could read, in part:

--
Michael G. Thomas
123 Minox Drive
Minox, CA 55555
Minox@Minox.org
703.555.1234
...
PEO-MGT-001.jpg

Photo made with Minox C in Zurich, Switzerland about 1998. It was at a chocolatiers' convention by the opera house. I can't remember the film used, but I believe it was APX25 rated at EI 50. I believe the processing was in XTOL 1:1. I printed it using a Beseler 23C II and custom film holder. This rendering is a scan of that print.
...
--

Once you've prepared your image files and assembled your info file, attach them to an email and send them to Contest2008@MinoxGallery.org. If your email service cannot handle all of your files together as attachments to one email, it's all right to send several individual emails each with a file attached.

IMPORTANT: All entry submission emails must be date stamped no later than midnight, Eastern Standard Time (US) on December 31, 2008 in order to be eligible.

Not supplying information in the requested format will slow down the posting of your images. We must have your address (to send you a prize if you win), your name and e-mail address. Good descriptions of your photos, their technical details, and how they were made may inform the judges in a way beneficial to you.
